“I am determined to be cheerful and happy in whatever situation I may find myself. For I have learned that the greater part of our misery or unhappiness is determined not by our circumstance but by our disposition.”- Martha Washington

Decades ago, when the PC world was still in its infancy stage (and costly), one of the software came out with the slogan – WYSIWYG or What You See Is What You Get.

The year 2017 was phenomenal. Decade-old relationships/friendships resurfaced. One of them, a college friend, shared a dialogue after 20 years or so; and, the first thing he said was: “how’s Penelope? Still in touch with her”.

I replied: ‘She must be doing fine. God bless her, wherever she is”.

Every time I think of you, my friend, I just listen to a song. I  can still picture you sitting in the cafeteria and pretending to sing the song.

Woman – An Essay

The significance of women in our lives as understood by the author – in the game of chess and the homefront (blending in a little bit of religion).

Game of Chess:

The history of chess spans over 1500 years. The earliest predecessor of the game probably originated in India, before the 6th century AD. From India, the game spread to Persia.

The King moves exactly one square horizontally, vertically, or diagonally.

A Rook moves any number of vacant squares in a horizontal or vertical direction.

A Bishop moves any number of vacant squares in any diagonal direction.

The Queen moves any number of vacant squares in a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal direction.

A Knight moves to the nearest square, not on the same rank, file, or diagonal. (This can be thought of as moving two squares horizontally then one square vertically or moving one square horizontally then two squares vertically, that is, in an “L” pattern.) The knight is not blocked by other pieces: it jumps to the new location.

Pawn moves straightforward one square if that square is vacant. If it has not yet moved, a pawn also has the option of moving two squares straight forward, provided both squares are vacant. Pawns cannot move backward.

It is determined that the queen is the most powerful piece in the game of chess.

First, the queen is a more mobile unit than the rook and bishop, as the entire power of the queen can be transferred to another location in one move while transferring the entire firepower of a rook and bishop requires two moves.

Second, the queen is not hampered by the bishop’s inability to control squares of the opposite color to the square on which it stands. A factor in favor of the rook and bishop is that they can attack (or defend) a square twice, while a queen can only do so only once, but experience has shown that this factor is usually less significant than the points favoring the queen.

The queen is at her most powerful when the board is open, when the enemy king is not well-defended, or when there are undefended pieces in the enemy camp. Because of her long range and ability to move in multiple directions, the queen is less restricted and more powerful also in closed positions.

On the Homefront:

“Creator of Life — A woman did not come out of man’s rib; a man came from her womb”. The definition of a mother is — to love, nourish, protect, teach, comfort, guide, nurture, support, embrace, cherish, reassure; someone who will love you unconditionally, till the last breath.

It is said that a mother can replace a father but a father can never replace a mother. This is a proven fact. In my little world, the friends that I know — all of them say that they always told their darkest and deepest secrets to their mothers and not the fathers. It (the Mother) symbolizes the element of Trust.

Although a mother’s role is important, a woman, as a wife, in some ways, plays a critical role as well. When a woman insists on being a wife first and mother second, she enriches the life of her husband, children and her true self. A wife needs to concentrate on her husband’s good qualities and express admiration and appreciation for his physical, mental and spiritual capabilities. She has to be his biggest morale booster. Certainly, the man, along with the family, must reciprocate likewise to keep the balance.

“Good leadership isn’t about advancing yourself; it’s about advancing the team”. The ‘team’, in this instance, is a Heavenly Home because “a woman doesn’t concern herself with what is right and what is wrong but with what is important”. A heavenly home, built on a strong foundation, is a pre-requisite; everything else is secondary.

Consider this fact – if all the women in this world cease to exist, the human race will cease to exist; on the contrary, if all the men cease to exist, the human race still goes on. At any given point in time, there are, at least, a million plus women ready to give birth (across the globe) and thus carry on the Human Race.

Note – Motherboards run every single Electronic Device that we see and use on a daily basis; Mother Nature runs the weather systems across the Globe; we refer to our native language as Mother Tongue; we refer our native country as Motherland et al.

In the Hindu religion, the most important goddess is Durga — the goddess of power and strength. She is a multi-dimensional Goddess, with many names, many personas, and many facets. She is the mother of bounty and wealth, as well as beauty and knowledge. She is the embodiment of purity, knowledge, truth, and self-realization.

And, the names of Goddess precede the name of God — such as Radhe Shyam, Sita Ram, and Gauri Shankar etc.

I can say with certainty that a woman is the most powerful piece on the home front, as well.

Thanks for reading.

Your analogy lends itself well to how well we are observed. We are the long awaited, cherished baby daughters, the little girls with curls who swing high in the branches of the majestic oak trees, the graceful young women who dream dreams of their own, the loving wives you long searched for, the caring, giving Mothers who present us with new life. We watch as our precious young give birth. We become the Grandmother we worshipped. We stand by your side as the sun sets over the horizon. We feel what you feel. We are your hopes & dreams. We are who you make us.

It is a wonderful essay and as a woman, mother and wife, I am very touched when a man says that a woman is important. Thank you.

I love your analysis of a woman using chess as the example; Beautifully expressed Sandeep. It brings to light the truth of the quote, “The hand that rock the cradle rules the world.”
